Got lost on the descent – father and daughter were trapped in the torrential rain on the mountain

Date:

Their lack of local knowledge cost a father and his daughter dearly during the descent of the Donnerkogel in Gosau (Upper Austria). The two Czechs got lost and then got stuck on the mountain due to heavy rain. Fortunately, they were able to pass on their coordinates so that they could be rescued by the Alpine police and the mountain rescue.

Two Czech citizens, a 48-year-old man and his 17-year-old daughter, went on a mountain hike on the Donnerkogel in Gosau on Saturday. They took the train to the Zwieselam around noon and climbed the “Intersport via ferrata” to the top, which they only reached around 5 p.m.

The funicular had already stopped working
After the descent, the cable car had already stopped and the two decided to walk into the valley to the Vorderer Gosausee. They chose the route via the “Feichteck”, where they ended up on an unmarked and very little used path along the former ski slope towards Gosausee.

Consequently, due to the weak climbing routes and lack of local knowledge, the two Czechs climbed into the steep, rocky terrain and could neither move forward nor backward.

Exhausted and soaked
When a heavy rain front finally arrived and darkness gradually set in, they called the emergency call around 8:40 p.m. Gmunden Alpine Police, working with Gosau’s mountain rescue team using the coordinates provided, were able to find the two unharmed at an altitude of about 1,100 meters, but exhausted and soaked in the steep terrain, then brought them safely down into the valley . .
