The Vienna Chamber of Labor has examined prices in markets and online stores. Conclusion: Individual products have become more than 60 percent more expensive than in the previous year.
When everyday shopping becomes a shocking experience. In March and April, the Chamber of Labor in Vienna surveyed prices for cheap drugstore items, food and cleaning products and already expensive branded items and compared them with the previous year. Result: There have been dramatic price increases in both rails.
Examples: In June 2021, a kilo of the cheapest wheat flour (conveniently) cost an average of 0.41 euros, now 0.67 euros. “A price increase of about 65 percent,” says AK consumer lawyer Gabriele Zgubic. For Ben’s original long grain rice (1 kilo), a supermarket charged 4.19 euros, 40 percent more than in 2021. An Ax shower gel (250 milliliters) was seen in a store for 3.89 euros (in April of the previous year, 2, 39 euros) ).
In online markets often only the more expensive goods
What the auditors, who surveyed ten branches and five online stores, noted: Many online drugstores often only offer more expensive goods. And not the cheap house brands they used to list.
However, there are exceptions: According to AK, the cheapest drugstore products in Müller’s online shop are 7.5 percent cheaper than a year ago. Consumer lawyer Zgubic: “Many people have to buy cheaper products because their household budget is tight. That is why politicians must do everything they can to keep food affordable.”
