Passengers stranded – Mallorca: flights cancelled, camping at the airport


The severe storms, including violent gusts of wind, have led to numerous flight cancellations on the holiday island of Mallorca. Dozens of tourists had to spend Monday night at Palma airport. Hundreds of passengers were affected, regional media reported. A total of 29 departures were canceled at Son Sant Joan airport on Sunday, according to the Spanish airport administration Aena. In addition, 27 inbound flights were canceled and 18 diverted.

In the summer, Mallorca often handles more than 1000 flights a day. The situation will largely normalize in the course of Monday, an airport spokesman said when asked.

300 weather-related incidents
According to the Balearic Islands emergency service, the sometimes violent storms with hurricanes and heavy rainfall have led to more than 300 incidents in Mallorca. It was mainly fallen trees that damaged cars or hindered traffic. According to official information, no one was seriously injured.

The media reported, among other things, about a pregnant woman who was hit by a flying billboard and injured her knee. The fire service reported 179 missions, mainly in the municipality of Calviá west of Palma.

Although damage was limited, the storm caused chaos not only in Mallorca, but also in some parts of Ibiza and Menorca, the media said. And also for horror moments. The “Mallorca Zeitung” and the “Mallorca Magazin” highlighted a case: two children were blown away on an air mattress by the strong wind at sea off the beach of Illetes in Calviá. But they managed to save them unharmed.

By Sunday evening, the weather in the Balearic Islands had calmed down again. The weather service Aemet lowered the warning level from orange to yellow. There is a warning for high waves on the coast.
