Donald Trump was nearly assassinated at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The FBI has officially classified the incident as an “attempted assassination” of the former and potential 47th president of the United States. The shooter was a 20-year-old from the region with ties to both Republicans and Democrats. Could this attack have been prevented by stricter gun laws?
Bad gun laws?
In the US, young children are often injured or killed while handling firearms. Unfortunately, school shootings in America are increasingly shocking the population. In Austria, for example, the risk of firearm abuse is reduced due to strict gun laws. On the pro-side, however, there are always voices in our country and in the US who believe that this means a limitation of self-defense. But now the question arises: could the assassination attempt on Trump and other tragic incidents involving firearms have been prevented if stricter gun laws had been introduced?
Politicians lead dangerous lives
Unfortunately, assassination attempts on presidents and other political actors have long been a tradition in the US. Most Americans probably remember the assassination attempt on JF Kennedy, but Martin Luther King, for example, was also the victim of a gunman.
Gun ownership is enshrined in the Constitution
The right to keep and bear arms is enshrined in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968 regulates the sale of firearms, prohibiting sales to certain people, such as criminals or the mentally disabled, and requiring gun dealers to be licensed. Background checks for gun buyers are also specified. However, each state has its own laws and regulations regarding gun ownership and transportation, which may be more or less restrictive than federal law. However, many states do not require registration of firearms. And while federal law requires background checks for purchases from licensed dealers, some states have no such requirement for private sales, sometimes referred to as the “gun show loophole.”
Did the shooter have a registered weapon?
The FBI identified the suspect as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Pennsylvania. Crooks was killed by security forces shortly after the attempted assassination of Trump. According to investigators, Crooks is from Bethel Park, a city about 45 miles south of Butler, where the campaign event took place. According to the FBI, Crooks’ motive is still unclear. The alleged attacker was registered to vote for the opposition Republicans, Trump’s party, but is also believed to have donated money to the Democrats. The question of whether the man legally owned a gun is likely still unresolved.
The Gun Lobby in America
As a result, the question comes to the fore whether the attack could have been prevented if the US had less lax gun laws. Rumor has it that the gun lobby is standing in the way of this project. Others believe that owning a gun in the US is to some extent part of their rights and customs.
What is your opinion on the issue of gun control? Do we need stricter gun control laws in the US? What regulations need to be tightened and why? Could this have prevented the assassination of Trump and others like him? We look forward to your comments!
