Cyclone Lan is expected to hit Japan on Tuesday.
The Kii Peninsula is particularly at risk, the weather bureau said on Sunday. Part of the prefectures of Osaka and Nara with the former imperial city of Nara are located on the peninsula that belongs to the Japanese main island of Honshu with its capital Tokyo.
The agency warned residents of eastern and western Japan of heavy rain and the associated risk of landslides in the coming days. The storms cover the island kingdom for the Buddhist ancestral festival O-Bon. Due to the approaching typhoon, many people returned from their homes and holiday destinations on weekends.
Many hurricanes every year
In Japan, the typhoon season runs from May to October, with August and September being the deadliest months. Because hurricanes are relatively common, the population is used to these extreme weather conditions. People then avoid public transport, stay indoors, stock up on groceries and follow the news. Every now and then there is a crazy demand for toilet paper – a reaction that we know very well in this country from the Corona period.
