On Sunday there was a devastating stable fire in Herzogenburg in the St. Pölten-Land district, killing 62 sheep. Two women, aged 51 and 62, suffered minor injuries when they tried to rescue the animals trapped in the barn. Only four sheep were ultimately saved.
The cause of the fire will not be clarified until Tuesday, police spokesman Raimund Schwaigerlehner announced on Monday.
Long-term follow-up work
A neighbor noticed the fire in the cadastral community of St. Andrä an der Traisen shortly before 4:30 p.m. and alerted the fire brigade. The highest alarm level “B4” was then declared and twelve fire brigades took action.
The fire was under control in the evening hours, but extinguishing work continued until Monday morning.
