Anti-Semitic article – Scholz urges clarification of the Aiwanger affair

Date:

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for a swift investigation into allegations of anti-Semitism against Bavarian Deputy Prime Minister Hubert Aiwanger. “From the chancellor’s point of view, everything must be clarified immediately and comprehensively,” a government spokesman said in Berlin on Monday. If not, there must be political consequences.

Markus Söder, Prime Minister of Bavaria, convened a special coalition committee in Munich on Tuesday. “The allegations are too serious for a deputy prime minister to comment only in writing and leave crucial questions unanswered,” said Head of State Florian Herrmann. “In addition to the written statement, he must explain himself personally and extensively. It’s about Bavaria’s reputation.”

The CSU rules together with the Free Voters in Bavaria. Aiwanger, the chairman of the Free Voters, denied allegations last weekend that he wrote an anti-Semitic leaflet at his school when he was 17. His brother later confessed. The chairman distances himself from the contents, but adds that he cannot remember whether he handed out the magazine.

This incident overshadowed the Bavarian election campaign. A new state parliament must be elected there in six weeks. Aiwanger is the top candidate for the Free Voters and Söder is running again for the CSU. The Greens and the SPD have already called for Aiwanger’s resignation. The SPD’s top candidate, Florian von Brunn, welcomed the exclusion from the special coalition.

From Tuesday, the voting documents will be sent by post in Bavaria on request. In the last two polls at the beginning of August, the CSU gained 39 percent each, the Greens 14, the Free Voters 14 and 12 percent, the AfD 13 and 14 percent, the SPD nine and the FDP four percent.
