Three valleys at your fingertips – breathe easy: Salzburg’s water levels are falling

Date:

In many parts of Salzburg, ‘everything clear’ cannot be given. For example, the situation in Grossarltal, Gasteinertal and Rauris has eased somewhat as rainfall decreased on Tuesday night after Monday’s rain masses. These three valleys are now accessible again.

However, a general ‘all-clear’ cannot be given. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, it started raining again in some places. The Salzburg State Police headquarters reported around 06:30 that the B159 at Pass Lueg was completely closed and that rainfall had increased again in Pinzgau.

Hundreds of emergency services from the civil protection, fire and district authorities have also been deployed throughout the country to keep an overview of the tense situation.

Obstacles in rail traffic
Positive: Only occasionally are the water levels so high that, according to the Hydrographic Service, they are at the reporting limit and can therefore pose a risk. You can breathe a sigh of relief in traffic again. Since 5 a.m., the connections on the way to the Rauris valley, the Gastein valley and the Grossarl valley are accessible again.

The ÖBB is still struggling with handicaps: the section between Bruck-Fusch and Taxenbach-Rauris has been open to traffic since 07:00. There is still no passage between Golling-Abtenau and the station in Werfen. A rail replacement service is in operation.

The Pinzgau local railway was damaged again
Pinzgau’s local railway line, which was badly damaged and rebuilt during the massive flood in 2021, is likely to have suffered again. The section in Niedernsill will probably be affected.

In the Ponzgau, especially in St. Johann and Bischofshofen, more than 200 emergency services fought against the water masses. The district of St. Johann in Urreiting is particularly affected, as is the commercial area. With great effort, it was possible to prevent the ingress of water, which allowed pollutants to enter the Salzach.
