A gunman opened fire at a North Carolina university, killing a faculty member. Shots were fired at a laboratory on the grounds of the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill shortly after 1 p.m. (local time) on Monday, as the university and authorities announced in the evening. After an hour and a half, the police arrested the suspected shooter. The background of the bloody deed is still unclear.
Students and staff were warned by the university and the police about an “armed and dangerous person on or near the campus” and asked to seek shelter in the university buildings. They barricaded themselves in lecture halls and offices. There was no evidence of other deaths or injuries. The head of the university was “shocked and saddened” in a statement.
