Italy continued to struggle with severe storms on Tuesday. The northern part and central Italy are affected by heavy rainfall, hail and strong winds. In Venice, the famous San Marco Square was flooded for the second time in August.
Rain, strong winds and high waves were reported from the city. The water level in Venice was about a meter above normal on Monday evening, the municipality announced. The “MOSE” dam system was therefore activated at three entrances to the city harbour. This will be taken into use when the predicted high water level is 130 centimetres.
The world-famous San Marco Square is now under water for the second time in August. Flooding in Venice this month is considered an extremely rare phenomenon and has been attributed by experts to climate change.
Floods in Tuscany
Flooding was also recorded on Tuesday in parts of Tuscany, such as Pisa and the Lazio region, including Rome. Landslides were also reported from different regions.
In Austria it has rained heavily in recent days, especially in the west and south. The hotspot was in the Vorarlberg district of Feldkirch, according to an analysis by Geosphere Austria. Tyrol, Salzburg, Styria and Upper Austria were also hit by heavy rainfall.
