Use of drones – search for 13 missing persons in the Dolomites continues

Date:

After the glacier rupture with seven dead in the Dolomites, 13 more missing are wanted. Drones are also being used. There are ten Italians and three Czechs – luckily contact was made with a also missing Lower Austrian.

So far, three Italians from the northern Italian province of Vicenza have been identified among the dead, including a 52-year-old mountain guide. He is said to have led one of the two rope teams buried by the glacier. Hopes of finding the missing alive are extremely low, rescue units said.

Parked cars can indicate missing persons
Eight people were injured in the accident. Among them are a 67-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman from Germany who were taken to a clinic in Belluno province, the hospital said. Authorities continued on Monday to search for the owners of four cars with foreign number plates. These parked in the parking lot, which is mostly used by the mountaineers who hike to the Marmolada peak.

Possibility of further glacier fractures makes deployment difficult
Using drones equipped with thermal imagers, which can detect a person’s heat source even in the dark, rescue teams combed the Marmolada Glacier in search of the missing. At night, the area affected by the glacier’s collapse was illuminated with large floodlights. The search will continue in the same way for the next few days, as the threat of further glacier fractures makes operations on the ground impossible.

“The search must continue. In the coming days we will continue to work with drones. We are monitoring the slope day and night. We can no longer dig, the snow mass has become so hard that you cannot even cut through it with a pickaxe,” said Maurizio Dell’Antonio, the chairman of the National Alpine Rescue Corps.
