At least 63 people have been killed in a fire in the South African city of Johannesburg. More than 40 other people were injured, the government of the largest South African city said on Thursday. Numerous covered bodies were seen outside the building in Johannesburg’s central business district.
The fire broke out at night in a five-story building. Dozens of residents have been evacuated, Robert Mulaudzi, spokesman for the local emergency services, said via Twitter on Thursday morning (X). The rescue and salvage operation therefore continues. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.
But the death toll could be higher because the building was an “informal settlement,” which may have resulted in people being trapped trying to escape.
“Each floor has an informal settlement, and those who tried to evacuate got trapped in the structures between the floors,” Mulaudzi explained.
