The operators of the nuclear ruins in Fukushima recently received permission to discharge filtered and diluted cooling water from the destroyed power plant into the sea. To alleviate the health problems, the Japanese prime minister himself tasted fish from the affected region.
Together with three ministers, Fumio Kishida ate fish from Fukushima – the verdict: “tastes very well”. As part of the campaign, Kishida also went to Toyosu fish market in Tokyo – surrounded by cameras, he also ate seafood from the unfortunate region there.
Kishida called on people to eat the “safe and tasty” Japanese fish to support the region.
Japanese fishermen are concerned
Japanese fishermen had recently been critical of the discharge of the treated cooling water. They fear for the reputation of their products at home and abroad. The government reportedly wants to support its fishermen with an aid package. They must also be helped to open up new export markets.
500 Olympic size swimming pools end up in the sea
As much as 1.3 million cubic meters of water used to cool the reactors will be discharged from the nuclear power plant into the sea in the coming decades. That corresponds to more than 500 Olympic swimming pools. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) considers this harmless.
The nuclear power plant was hit by a huge tsunami in 2011 as a result of a major earthquake, which melted three of the six reactors.
