These photos from northern Greece show just how bad the consequences of devastating forest fires can be.
Extensive soot landscapes in the forests of Kirki and Dadia in the Evros region. Greece was hit by several forest fires in August. In total, the disasters claimed twenty lives, eighteen of them in the northeast of the country alone.
Here in Evros, trees had to be bulldozed. Solar panels on the fields are damaged and now need to be repaired.
The animals were the hardest hit. They had no chance to escape and perished in the flames. Now a sad picture emerges: charred turtles and snakes simply decompose.
In 2023, more than 120,000 hectares of land burned down throughout Greece. In total, about 500 firefighters were involved in the extinguishing work, including soldiers from the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Romania.
But more than a hundred special vehicles were also deployed.
