Video Summit – EU leaders discuss Ukraine conflict with Xi

Date:

Top European Union representatives will meet Chinese Head of State and Party Leader Xi Jinping and Head of Government Li Keqiang for a video conference meeting organized on Friday: EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Council President Charles Michel and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wants the Chinese leadership to be present, calls for condemnation of the Russian attack on Ukraine and warns of possible consequences.

It is about material support for the war on the part of China. In the conflict, China is currently providing political support to the Moscow government and portraying the US, its European allies and NATO as the real cause of the crisis. Nevertheless, Europeans are counting on China to use its influence over its “strategic partner” Russia to end the war as soon as possible.

The main reason for hope is the importance of the EU as a market for Chinese companies.

Investment deal on hold
Relations between the EU and China are more tense than ever: Europeans criticize the persecution of Uyghurs and Tibetans, the repression of the opposition in Hong Kong, China’s saber-rattling against free Taiwan and pressure on petty EU members like Lithuania. Since the Chinese sanctions against EU representatives, the planned investment agreement has also been put on hold.

“The EU will take the opportunity to emphasize the need to preserve the rules-based international order and universal values,” an EU statement said at the summit. The European Union will also call for the resumption of the human rights dialogue with China.
