The Israeli military said Monday it has eliminated a missile expert from the Islamist Hamas in Syria. Hassan Hakasha was responsible for rocket fire on Israel from Syria in recent weeks, the army said. The assassination of a high-ranking commander of the pro-Iranian Shia militia Hezbollah in Lebanon (see video above) had previously been announced.
Hakasha was killed in the town of Beit Jinn, southwest of Damascus, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Further details are not yet known. Israel will not tolerate terrorism from Syrian territory and will hold Syria responsible for all activities originating from its territory, the military said in the statement.
Israel does not normally comment on attacks on opponents abroad. Hours earlier, a key commander of the Shiite militia Hezbollah, Wissam al-Tawil, was killed in Lebanon in a suspected Israeli drone strike. There was no confirmation of this from the Israeli side, just as there was no confirmation of the deadly attack on Hamas’ second highest leader abroad, Saleh al-Arouri, last Tuesday in the Lebanese capital Beirut, also allegedly carried out by Israel.
Israel’s multi-front war
Israel has been fighting the terrorist organization in the coastal strip since Hamas’ bloody attack on towns near the Gaza Strip on October 7. Hezbollah in Lebanon, which like Hamas is an ally of Iran, has been shelling Israel almost every day since then, whose army has returned fire. Israel also came under repeated fire from Syria. Concerns about an expansion of the Gaza war are increasing.
