In a small area – Five live bombs dug out of the ground

Date:

Spectacular find on a piece of land in the south of Lower Austria: several war relics lay underground in just a few square meters. The heaviest bombs each weighed 100 kilograms.

“This large number in such a small area is extraordinary,” says Stefan Plainer, head of EOD Munitionsbergung. His team excavated five active Russian aerial bombs in an area of about 400 square meters in the south of Lower Austria.

Property pre-checked
The find, of course, did not come as a surprise to the experienced team. A surface sounding was carried out on site during the preparatory work. “We knew exactly where and how many bombs were hidden underground,” says Plainer. It concerned two war relics of 100 kilos each, and three war relics of 50 kilos each. All five still had a detonator. All were handed over to the army’s mine clearance service.

Plainer won’t reveal the exact location this time. “Unfortunately, finding a large number of bombs always attracts private individuals with their probes looking for special finds. But that is life-threatening,” reports the ammunition professional.

Grenade for flood protection
Another case for the mine clearance service was a grenade find in the Rehberg district of Krems. There, during the construction of the flood barrier, workers came across a tank shell of almost ten centimeters. However, it no longer had an igniter.
