For more than twenty years, people in Melk (Lower Austria) have been battling an insidious companion: the breathtaking sleep apnea. What disease is involved here and how to recognize it – the “Krone” spoke with one of the leading experts in this field.
Nearly 1,500 tests are performed annually in the sleep laboratory at Melk. Research there means that you spend the night with more than twenty cables and sensors connected. ‘Don’t worry they can’t fall asleep with us. If they really suffer from sleep apnea, then I can put them in the corner and they fall asleep,” laughs senior physician Johannes Lechner. From the start, the head of the sleep laboratory is regarded as an absolute expert and man for the very special field in Melk, which is usually not taught to the nursing staff during training.
