Festival “Burning Man”: tens of thousands are trapped

Date:

The year 2023 will not exactly go down in history as an ‘easy’ festival year. Gatsch and rain dominated for days at Novarock in Austria, while the metal spectacle Wacken was even threatened with cancellation due to heavy storms. But that the ‘Burning Man’ festival in the desert of the US state of Nevada could sink into the mud due to heavy rainfall – no one expected that…

And yet it is. Tens of thousands of visitors to the desert festival are stuck in place. All accesses to the site are blocked. The temporary airport will also remain closed.

Festival goers should conserve water and food
The scene of music and arts events traditionally attracts artists, techno fans, pyrotechnicians and the curious from all over the world. In the desert, the contestants build a temporary city called Black Rock City out of tents and mobile homes.

A state of emergency has now been declared on the extensive festival grounds. Organizers asked residents of the desert city being built during the week-long spectacle to conserve food and water.

The rain started on Friday and continued on Saturday. Visitors now sank up to their ankles in the mud. Some walked for miles, others tried to drive off the site and were stranded.

Organizers: “Turn around and don’t come here!”
There would be more than 70,000 people on the site and the festival ends on Monday. Organizers expect more rain and are urging people who are on their way to the festival site despite the conditions to “turn around and go home”.

According to the organizers, as many as 75,000 people stayed in the desert city last year. The festival was founded in 1986 on a beach in San Francisco. Due to popular demand, it was moved to the Nevada desert in 1990.

A core ritual at the end of the cult event is the burning of Burning Man, an oversized wooden statue.
