Terrible mountain drama Sunday in South Tyrol: two mountaineers fell on the almost 4000 meter high Ortler – for them all help came too late. The dead were recovered by the ambulance helicopter. The two had traveled in groups.
Six climbers had moved into an in itself uncomplicated place. According to the first witnesses, the accident happened after a boulder that a climber was holding on to came loose.
Stone broke loose on fragile terrain
He fell, but was able to catch himself again. However, his fall brought down two climbers walking behind him, who then fell. The two alpinists died at the scene of the accident. The ambulance helicopter was only able to rescue the two dead.
Group is in shock
The dead are said to be a 35-year-old German and a 46-year-old Romanian living in Italy. Two other members of the group were also slightly injured or taken into the valley in shock.
