Ukrainian general: – Russian first line of defense breached

Date:

The counter-offensive of the Ukrainian forces apparently shows significant successes: According to Brigadier General Oleksander Tarnavskyj in the Zaporizhia region, the defenders have broken through the first and strongest of several Russian defense lines, commanding the forces deployed in Zaporizhia. said the region in an interview.

The Ukrainian defenders are now between the first and second Russian defense lines to the south, the general told the British Observer. The Russians have spent 60 percent of their resources and time on the front line alone, Tarnavskyj said. Only 20 percent of the resources can be expected for defense lines two and three. The counter-offensive was hampered for a long time by a huge minefield in the region. Tarnawskyj said the demining was mainly done at night. Currently, the Ukrainians are moving towards the second line.

Weeks of battles
In the Zaporizhia region, after weeks of fighting, the Ukrainian army finally defeated the Russian defenses at Robotyne. Now the next Russian line must be attacked, blocking the way to the occupied cities of Tokmak and Melitopol. The aim is to reach the Sea of Azov, some 90 kilometers away, and cut off the Russian forces.

The Ukrainian armed forces have been reporting progress in the region for days, which the US Institute for War Studies ISW also wrote in an analysis. Problems with the occupiers of Moscow were also discussed, citing Russian sources. For Russia, the situation at the front is deteriorating. In the Bakhmut area in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry has repeatedly reported that it is gaining ground in the fight against the Russian occupiers.

Attacks on Danube ports
A day before top-level Turkish-Russian talks on grain exports from Ukraine, there were new attacks on Danube ports in the Odessa region. Two civilians were injured and port facilities damaged during Russia’s three-and-a-half-hour attack early Sunday morning, the Ukrainian air force said on Telegram. The Danube ports are currently the main route for Ukrainian grain exports after Russia pulled out of a Turkey-UN brokered deal on safe exports across the Black Sea in July. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

According to insiders, the meeting in the Russian city of Sochi on the Black Sea will focus mainly on grain exports. The Ankara government is trying to convince Putin to return to the deal, which has been extended several times until July. After his departure, Russia threatened to target grain ships in the Black Sea. As a result, Ukraine diverted many exports to the Danube, but also established a corridor in the Black Sea for safe transport. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, two more ships have now sailed through this sea route. According to the Ukrainian authorities, two ships passed through the corridor on Friday.

22 drones shot down
In the morning attacks on Danube ports in the greater Odessa area, Russia used 25 Iranian-made Shahed drones, shooting down 22 of them, the Ukrainian air force said. “Russian terrorists continue to attack port infrastructure in hopes of causing a food crisis and famine in the world,” Zelenskyy chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram.

The Ukrainian authorities have not provided information on which port facility was affected. The army said the fire caused by the attack was quickly extinguished. Some Ukrainian media reported explosions in Reni, one of the two main Ukrainian ports on the Danube. Reni and the other major port on the Danube, Ismajl, have been repeatedly attacked by Russian drones in recent weeks.
