Meeting with Putin – Erdogan announces “very important communication”.

Date:

Negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the war in Ukraine and the grain deal have begun. On the sidelines of the talks, Erdogan announced a “very important message”. Is the Ukrainian grain export moving again?

The Kremlin boss received his guest in front of his home in Sochi on the Black Sea on Monday afternoon, television footage showed. During the chat in front of the cameras, the Kremlin boss joked, “You should go on vacation here. Usually it is we who come to you.” Erdogan has traveled to Russia to promote a revival of Ukraine’s grain export deal.

Turkey had helped broker the agreement in the summer of 2022, which ended Russia’s naval blockade of Ukrainian ports, also in its own interest. In mid-July, Russia suspended the agreement and demanded export guarantees for its own agricultural products in the face of Western economic sanctions over Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The return to the agreement demanded by Erdogan would be important for the world’s food supply.

Ankara is concerned about safety in the Black Sea
Turkey is also concerned about security in the Black Sea region, according to Ankara. Putin had set conditions for a return to the agreement brokered last year by the Erdogan government and the United Nations. For example, the sanctions imposed by the West on Ukraine in the course of Russia’s war of aggression must be relaxed so that Moscow can once again export its own grain and fertilizers without hindrance. The Russian gas supply via the Black Sea is also important for Turkey.
