The Danish orchestra in Copenhagen now received animal support at a concert: three dogs barked more or less in time with the piece “Hunting Symphony” by Leopold Mozart. Sophus, Cookie and Sica were selected during an audition in the spring.
During rehearsal, Torben Petersen gestured with his arms to make his eight-year-old spaniel Sophus bark. He and the other masters and mistresses rewarded the animals with treats. “If I had to stand here alone, I would be nervous,” said Helle Lauvring, Cookie’s mistress. “But all the attention is on her, she’s the star.”
The work is rarely performed with dogs on stage, orchestras prefer to use sound recordings. However, it was not a consideration for the Danish orchestra to do without dogs on stage, according to conductor Andreas Vetö. “Our chief conductor Adam Fischer has wanted to perform this piece for several years because he can incorporate this element of the participating dogs into it.”
The performed symphony consists of three movements. In the last sentence the hunt begins, after shots the use of the dogs could be heard. Vetö had previously announced the four-legged friends to the concertgoers.
