Artillery shells landed in the buffer zone
North Korea had fueled tensions in the region in recent days with several missile launches. On Friday night, Pyongyang also fired artillery barrages at the “maritime buffer zone” in the sea area between the two countries. According to the South Korean military, North Korea fired 80 artillery shells that landed in the buffer zone.

The Seoul government denounced “ongoing threats” based on North Korea’s “reckless development of nuclear weapons and missiles”.

Military maneuvers in South Korea have been extended
The US and South Korea are currently holding a joint military exercise called the Vigilant Storm. In response to North Korea’s firing of an ICBM on Thursday, the maneuver was extended through Saturday. The US also called on the international community to fully implement sanctions against Pyongyang.

Concerns over possible nuclear weapons test by North Korea
Washington and Seoul have been warning for months that North Korea could conduct a nuclear weapons test in the near future. It would be the first such test since 2017. North Korea has conducted six nuclear weapons tests since 2006.
