Just one day before the criminal case at the Vienna Regional Court, it became known that the accused Florian Teichtmeister was reinforcing himself with another top lawyer. The experienced Rudolf Mayer (75) will defend the 43-year-old ex-castle actor in the large courtroom. The side effects were not long in coming: the lawyer was verbally abused and threatened via hate mail.
“Woe to you, represent this filth…” is the menacing subject of one of the emails that arrived in the criminal lawyer’s inbox on Monday. “You’re probably just a K… like your client, but you can’t save him,” it says. Just one of many disturbing messages Mayer received on Monday.
Hostilities are part of the work of criminal lawyers, but the atmosphere is rarely as heated as in the Teichtmeister case. The former television commissioner collected 76,000 images of serious child sexual abuse to create deeply disturbing collages. The 43-year-old faces a prison sentence of up to three years.
Barrier under construction
For a right-wing extremist group, Teichtmeister has become enemy number one. More than a hundred people gathered this weekend in Langenlois, Lower Austria, to demonstrate with torches and gallows (!) against the ex-TV star. On Tuesday they want to march around the courthouse in Vienna – the tension in the judiciary and the executive is high.
Barriers were already installed at Landl in Josefstadt on Monday evening. Hundreds of police officers – uniformed and in civilian clothes – will be on duty around the criminal process. This ensures that Teichtmeister and his lawyers enter the courtroom unscathed.
