The Russian armed forces complain of a lack of training, a lack of ammunition and equipment, and low morale among the troops. This is evident from seventeen telephone calls intercepted by the Ukrainian secret service in July (see video above).
For example, the Russian soldier Andrei reported to his wife about heavy losses in his unit. The armed forces are so poorly equipped that it was reminiscent of the Soviet troops in World War II. ‘You’re killing us. No ammunition, nothing, should we use our fingers as bayonets?” said Andrew.
The intercepted calls provide insight into the conditions encountered by Russian soldiers in Ukraine. Reuters news agency was able to determine that the numbers match the names of the armed forces or their members.
Neil Melvin of the think tank International Security Studies at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) also considers the statements to be authentic. They documented the state in which the Russian soldiers are sometimes sent into battle without any training, leading to many casualties. This in turn increased tensions within the troops.
“Rotten, Eaten by Worms”
“They were torn apart,” soldier Alexei reported to his mother Elena on July 12. “They lay there, some of them couldn’t save, they were already rotting, eaten by worms.” “Imagine being thrown to the front, with no equipment, with nothing,” the Russian recalls. Alexei was called up on September 29, 2022 and soon found himself at the front. He was sent to the battlefield despite President Vladimir Putin’s public assurances that the newcomers would not have to go to the front.
The actual losses are also being kept secret from Moscow’s military leadership, Alexei said. ‘Everything is covered. Everyone is afraid (…). And in the end, the generals don’t care.”
