The 44 rescued fighting dogs from Ansfelden in Upper Austria are severely psychologically traumatized and physically disabled. Whether they can ever be passed on is uncertain. And further evidence shows how outrageous the attitude must have been.
It is considered undisputed: the 44 dogs rescued from the hands of an alleged animal abuser (45) in Ansfelden must have experienced true martyrdom in the unlit basement dungeon. The living conditions were so extreme that most of them will probably remain scarred by them for the rest of their lives.
In addition to the much too small and totally dirty cages, the four-legged friends received hardly any food and no water – only soaked, spoiled dry food. They are trained to kill their own kind in illegal combat. Krone’s investigation revealed that a number of cartridge cases had also been seized in the basement. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the animals were shot.
I only learned how to kill
The mistreatment seems to result not only in external wounds, but also in massive behavioral disturbances. “We ourselves were able to save 23 dogs from this hell. We were allowed to take fourteen of them to Tierschutz Austria in Vösendorf and we are now trying to care for nine American Staffordshire dogs as best we can,” says Johanna Stadler, head of Pfotenhilfe Lochen.
Comprehensive care
Healthcare is complex and intensive. “They can only be kept alone for now, because they’ve only learned to kill other dogs,” says Stadler. Experienced trainers are now trying to psychologically stabilize and socialize them. “You don’t even know toys, you don’t know what to do with them. For example, they do not take treats from their hands, but wait until they are alone with them. And they weren’t used to drinking either.”
The protégés are acting extremely grateful at the moment and are slowly starting to relax. Sun and fresh air are good for them. “With physiotherapy we try to correct the postural damage caused by the cages. Thanks to special feed, they should now gain weight and muscle mass.”
Whether the foster children can ever be placed? Stadler: “It is difficult to predict, it still requires a lot of patience and caution.”
