In recent days, several high-ranking members of the far-right US militia Proud Boys were sentenced to several years in prison. On Tuesday it was the turn of former leader Enrique Tarrio. At age 22, he served the longest sentence in a trial involving the storming of the Capitol in Washington DC.
Prosecutors had even demanded 33 years in prison for Tarrio’s “central role” in the attack on the seat of the US parliament, which formally confirmed Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election on January 6, 2021. Radical supporters of former President Donald Trump wanted to prevent this with their action. Tarrio was not there himself, but is accused by members of the Proud Boys of leading the attack.
“Supreme Leader of the Conspiracy”
Tarrio, 39, and several other members of the Proud Boys were found guilty of a “seditious conspiracy” in May. Judge Kelly justified the stiff sentence against Tarrio by saying he was the “supreme leader of the conspiracy”.
So far 1100 arrests and 300 convictions
Another Proud Boys member, 32-year-old Ethan Nordean, was sentenced to 18 years in prison by Judge Kelly last week. Stewart Rhodes, the founder of another far-right militia involved in the storming of the US Capitol – the Oath Keepers – also received an 18-year prison sentence.
Nearly 1,100 suspects were arrested after the riot that left five dead in what is considered a black day in the history of American democracy. More than 300 of them were convicted by the court.
