From a global perspective, the summer of 2023 was by far the hottest since measurements began in 1940. The average temperature during the period was 16.77 degrees and therefore 0.66 degrees above average, again significantly higher than in the previous record year 2019 by 16 degrees. 48 degrees.
“Global temperature records will continue to fall in 2023. The warmest August follows the warmest July and June, leading to the warmest summer in our data set, stretching back to 1940,” says Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the EU Earth Observation Programme.
The year so far (January to August) is the second warmest on record, after 2016, when a strongly warming El Niño occurred. Currently, the climate phenomenon is accumulating again – so that climate experts are looking with concern at the coming period.
Guterres calls on government leaders to take action
“Our climate is imploding faster than we can cope with extreme weather events hitting every corner of the planet,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said of the Copernicus data. He called on the heads of state and government to take action. “We can still prevent the worst climate chaos – and we don’t have a moment to lose.”
More extreme weather events in the future
“The scientific evidence is overwhelming,” says Copernicus deputy director Burgess. “We will continue to see climate records and increasingly intense and frequent extreme weather events impacting society and ecosystems until we stop emitting greenhouse gases.” The year 2023 is currently only 0.01 degrees behind the current record holder set in 2016.
The results are based on computer-generated analysis using billions of measurements from satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations around the world. Climate researchers can reconstruct the historical climate on the basis of tree rings, air bubbles in glaciers and corals, among other things.
