In Turkey, a seriously ill American cave explorer has been trapped at a depth of about 1,000 meters for five days. Since Sunday, some 150 rescuers have been working to rescue the man from the Morca cave in the southeast of the country, it was said on Thursday. It’s a dramatic race against time.
The man, about 40 years old, was part of an international research team that explored Turkey’s third deepest cave, said Yaman Özakin, spokesman for the Turkish Association of Speleologists.
Gastric bleeding at a depth of 1250 meters
During the expedition, he suffered a stomach haemorrhage at a depth of 1,250 meters. His colleagues managed to get him to the camp at a depth of 1,000 meters, but further rescue was extremely difficult. He had to be brought out with a special device, but it did not fit through the narrow cave passages. Emergency services are currently blowing up the narrow spaces.
The whole campaign could take another two weeks
According to the cave association, doctors have now reached the American and there is telephone contact. He has previously received a blood transfusion. Teams from Hungary and Italy are involved in the rescue, and German helpers are on the alert. According to Özakin, it will be another two weeks before the cave explorer can be released.
