As expected, French Prime Minister Jean Castex resigned on Monday. Castex told the AFP news agency that he had handed over his letter of resignation to President Emmanuel Macron. Macron is expected to appoint a woman prime minister soon – for the second time in the republic’s history.
Prime Minister had already announced in mid-April, a few days before the presidential elections, that if Macron were to win, he would hand in his resignation and that of his government within days, “as is tradition”.
President Emmanuel Macron has accepted his resignation, the Elysée Palace announced. However, Castex will still be in charge of official affairs until a new government is appointed. “Thank you @JeanCastex, his government and his entire team,” Macron wrote on Twitter. For almost two years now, Castex has been campaigning “passionately and with dedication” for France. “Let’s be proud of the work we’ve done and the results we’ve achieved together,” he wrote (tweet below).
Before the election, Macron announced that the future prime minister must also be responsible for environmental policy. The president had been criticized for falling far short of expectations during his first term in office.
Minister of Labor Borne becomes prime minister
The appointment of Minister of Labor Elisabeth Borne as Prime Minister is under discussion. France has never had a female head of state and only had a female head of government for less than twelve months, namely – 1991/1992 – Edith Cresson.
