Navarro Guilty – Contempt of Congress: Trump Adviser Convicted

Date:

Former US President Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been convicted of contempt of Congress by a federal court in Washington. The jury found the 74-year-old guilty of refusing to hand over documents and testify before a House of Representatives committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

A verdict will be announced at a later date. He faces between 30 days and a year in prison on both counts.

“Government works when people obey the rules”
“Peter Navarro made a decision,” quoted the Washington Post, among others, from prosecutor Elizabeth Aloi’s closing argument. “He chose not to comply with a subpoena from Congress. Our government only works if people follow the rules. And it only works if they are held accountable if they don’t.’ Navarro had argued that he failed to comply with the subpoena because Trump directed him to say he was exempt from it because of executive privilege.

Trump’s second adviser convicted
Navarro is the second Trump adviser convicted of failing to cooperate with the committee. Former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison last fall for contempt of Congress, but appealed the decision and remains at large pending the outcome. Navarro also announced that he would take action against the decision.

The Commission of Inquiry has reviewed the events of January 6, 2021: on that day, Trump supporters violently stormed the House of Representatives in Washington, where Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election was about to be confirmed.
