The European Court of Justice has fined Sweden for “serious breach of contract”. In concrete terms, this involves tightening EU weapons laws.
The new directive should actually have been transposed into national law in September 2018. However, Sweden did not do this until July 2023. The European Commission had already turned to the ECJ in May 2022 to have it determined that Sweden had not implemented the changes and to impose a financial penalty.
Possible consequences for public safety
The Court of Justice now declared that Sweden had failed to fulfill its obligation. Breach of contract is more serious because it has potential consequences for public safety and protection against crime. The court therefore imposed a fine of eight and a half million euros.
The EU Firearms Directive, which was amended in 2017, stipulates, among other things, that the purchase and sale of semi-automatic firearms is restricted.
