Two men working as ‘fake police officers’ were pulled from traffic last Friday by real officers from the Task Force to Combat Street Crime (EGS) in Lower Austria. There was an active arrest warrant against the duo on suspicion of serious fraud.
As the Vienna police announced on Friday, the arrest of a 19-year-old and a 24-year-old suspect was the result of cooperation between investigators from the federal capital and from Vorarlberg, Upper Austria and Lower Austria. The exact number of crimes they were accused of or a preliminary amount of damages was not yet known, but the two men likely operated their fraud scheme over several months.
It is said that the savings are at risk
As in similar cases, the suspects tried to convince their victims that their savings were at risk. For example, they said that they were on the trail of a criminal bank employee and that due to the acute danger it was advisable to withdraw savings deposits as quickly as possible and hand them over to the alleged official as security.
The two suspects divided their work: one called, while the ‘colleague’ went to visit the victim personally as soon as possible to create some time pressure.
Investigations continue
On the orders of the Feldkirch Public Prosecutor’s Office, the suspects have been taken into custody and the Vorarlberg state police are leading the investigation.
