Moscow announces evacuation of wounded soldiers from Azovstal. at

The Kremlin claims to transfer the disabled to Donetsk to give them medical treatment, but Kiev does not confirm the information

Ukraine has been living for 83 days of continuous war under Russian attacks. The soldiers still in the Azovstal steel factory in Mariúpol were still blocked as of Monday, with little water, food or medicine for days. The humanitarian corridors that have been opened in recent days have managed to free the civilians, although there are still soldiers in the facilities.

Negotiations over the weekend to evacuate the wounded defenders were unsuccessful, but another attempt was apparently made on Monday. The Russian Defense Ministry announced a ceasefire near the steel plant to encourage the departure of soldiers who are not in optimal conditions. According to Moscow, the humanitarian corridor was reached after an agreement was reached “with representatives of the Ukrainian troops”, whereby the wounded soldiers “will be taken to the city of Novoazovsk in Donetsk, where they will receive medical treatment”. However, Kiev has not confirmed the information.

For his part, the deputy head of the militia of the self-declared republic of Donetsk, Eduard Basurin, preferred not to comment on statements in recent days alleging that a dozen people had managed to leave the Azovstal factory, where further barricaded the Ukrainian troops. Kiev media confirmed on Saturday that some 600 more were injured in Azovstal, many of them “serious”, in “precarious and unhealthy” conditions.

“The situation is very bad,” explained a representative of the Donetsk state police, who remains at the steel plant, describing how they are doing. In a huge gym, with a few dozen bunk beds, the rest is on the floor. There are fighters without limbs. No arms or legs, and others without serious injuries. The conditions, completely unsanitary. It’s terrible,” he said.

On the other hand, relatives of the Mariupol fighters went to Ankara to ask Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to involve Chinese leader Xi Jinping in the rescue of the Azovstal defenders. “Find ways to carry out extraction and evacuation. The people there are in appalling conditions. They must be rescued now,” said the next of kin, denouncing that Moscow bombs Azovstal every day and launches so-called “bunkerbuster” bombs, which weigh 500 kilograms, on the factory.

Meanwhile, the attacks continued this Monday in the Lugansk region. Severodonetsk and Lisichansk were hit by shelling, killing at least 10 people, according to the region’s governor Sergei Gaidai, who noted that “the hospital has been shelled again”. A research and production company was also targeted for destruction. The Kremlin army “fired all day long throughout the city. Houses are damaged. High-rise buildings have been chaotically bombed in different parts of the regional center,” Gaidai criticized, explaining that “it is currently extremely difficult to bring the area under control due to new attacks”. For all these reasons, he insisted. urges citizens still in the city to stay safe.
