Due to heavy fog in three exhibition halls, the fire brigade and police were deployed to two weddings with an estimated 2,000 guests in Wels on Saturday evening. A smoke machine was set up and fire alarms activated at both events.
While a large number of firefighters responded to a chlorine gas leak in the Wels outdoor swimming pool, troops were called to a fire alarm in the adjacent exhibition centre. When emergency services from two fire brigades arrived, the reason for the automatic alarm quickly became clear.
Partly significant „smoky“
Three halls – the 1st, 5th and 6th – were partly heavily smoked. The reason for this was not the wedding barbecue, but the use of smoke machines, according to FF Wels operations manager Jörg Stadler: “The organizers had forgotten to switch off the fire alarm system. This was activated by the fog.”
The doors and gates of the halls were opened so that the smoke could clear somewhat. The two fog machines were disabled and put away and their further use was prohibited.
