Help came too late: mountain rescuers could only save dead hikers

Date:

The mountain rescue team started looking for Bad Gastein on Sunday morning. A 71-year-old from Pongau had been missing since the previous day. The hiker was found around noon; all help came too late for him…

The man was reported missing on Sunday morning. He had already left for Graukogel on Saturday and never came home. Police found the missing man’s car, “so we could narrow the search area somewhat,” said mountain rescuer and Gastein district manager Gerhard Kremser. “He was also regularly out and about in this area on the Graukogel.”

Hikers discovered the dead man
More than twenty mountain rescuers from Gastein combed the large search area, together with five dog handlers and the Alpine police. “Around noon, three hikers discovered the dead man,” Kremser said. The man had already died on Saturday near the slopes – probably as a result of cardiovascular disease. The police helicopter team “Libelle Salzburg” carried out the rescue.
