Hawaii’s Kilauea shield volcano erupted again on Sunday after a prolonged period of increased seismic activity. Film footage (video above) shows the volcano being haunted by lava fountains.
After the eruption, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) raised the volcano’s alert level to “Warning”. The color code for aviation is now red as potential threats from the outbreak are assessed, the report said.
Authorities in Hawaii said the eruption posed no immediate threat to communities in the mountain valley. The eruption began at 3:15 p.m. local time, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said Sunday.
One of the most active volcanoes in the world
Kilauea – considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world – is located southeast of the 4,170-meter-high Mauna Loa on the largest island in the Hawaiian island chain, which itself bears the name Hawaii and is also called the Big Island.
