Medvedev jokes with Djokovic: “What else are you doing here?”

Date:

The Russian Daniel Medvedevwho fell this Sunday in the final of US Open against Novak Djokovicused irony to praise the Serbian, who at the age of 36 won her 24th Grand Slam and equaled Margaret Court’s record.

“First of all, I want to ask Novak: What else are you doing here? Come on…” He joked on the court after the final.

“I don’t know when you intend to slow down a little… But congratulations to you and your team. 24 ‘Grand Slam’… I feel like I haven’t had a bad career and I have 20 titles, but you have 24 grand slams. Wow,” he added while ‘Nole’ couldn’t stop laughing next to him.

Medvedev, who defeated Djokovic in the 2021 US Open final, will not repeat this time. “It seems unbelievable to me that he beat Novak in a ‘Grand Slam’ final. Probably, at this moment that is the peak of my career,” he said.

“At the same time, if they don’t have Rafa (Nadal)… I have played five finals against them and I have won only one (…). Qero Djokovic pushes me to be better,” he said.

Continuing the jokes, the Russian commented that two years ago, when he won the US Open, that title was the perfect gift for his wedding anniversary, which was at this time.

Because of this, he repented this Sunday, telling his wife – who was present in the stands – that he could not repeat that gift.

Soon, Djokovic took over with a sense of humor on court. “Please don’t take this the wrong way… Happy anniversary to your wife. I’m sorry, I’m sorry… I’m saying this in a good way, honestly. If I had known that your anniversary is now, perhaps, you know, the result …”, he irons.

Already at the press conference, Medvedev thought in the second set that he was close to winning and it could change the final.

“The second set was the best I played and I didn’t win. That is the reason why, I would say, it’s normal that the fight went to him, because in the first and third he was better, there’s not much to say. “If I won the second one, maybe it would be a different game,” he said.

“When we play again, it’s a different story. I’m not sure there’s much to learn (from today’s game). But yeah, that’s life and tennis. “I will try to do better next time,” he added.
