Companion shocked – hiker (70) fell to his death in the Zillertal

Fatal alpine accident Monday afternoon in Mayrhofen in the Tyrolean Zillertal: A 70-year-old German fell during the descent of the Ahornspitze for a still unknown cause. He later died at the scene of the accident.

The hiker was descending the 2,973-meter-high Ahornspitze with a colleague around 12:30 p.m. when the accident occurred. For reasons that are still unclear, the 70-year-old fell about 150 meters into the depths. He injured himself so seriously that all help came too late. The emergency doctor from a rescue helicopter could only determine that the man was dead.

Severely shocked companion flew into the valley
With the support of the Mayrhofen mountain rescue service, the police helicopter recovered the injured hiker’s body using rope and flew it to the valley, where it was transferred for burial.

The deceased’s companion received a severe shock. He was also taken to the valley by helicopter.
