Will the dengue mosquito come to Austria?

Bone-breaking fever, rash, internal bleeding, plus pain in the head, muscles, limbs, bones and joints. Doesn’t sound very exciting. Dengue fever can even be fatal under certain conditions. Whether the tropical disease can spread in Austria, how useful a vaccination is and what other protective measures are available.

In recent days and weeks, authorities around Lake Garda have been on alert: an outbreak of dengue cases has firmly gripped the Italian holiday region and more and more cases of the disease have been reported.

This despite the fact that dengue is a disease that actually only occurs in the tropics. It is known from long-distance travelers and adventurers who venture into rainforests – it is transmitted by nasty mosquitoes: the yellow fever mosquito and the Asian tiger mosquito. And the latter is now also at our home.
