“It looks worse than it is,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote over a week ago on X (formerly Twitter). The head of government could be seen wearing a black eye patch and scratches on his face. He also presented this with humor during public appearances in the days that followed. Now he has been freed from his ‘pirate outfit’ again.
On Tuesday, the Social Democrat appeared in public for the first time without an eye patch. He gave a speech at the peace meeting of the community of Sant’Egidio in Berlin. Traces of his accident were no longer visible on his face.
Fell while jogging
Scholz, 65, fell on his face while jogging. Since then, he has worn a black eye patch due to facial injuries, including during the G20 meeting in India (see tweets above).
Besides numerous well wishes, there were also some funny memes on social media. Scholz was compared to the main character from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, Jack Sparrow, played by Hollywood star Johnyy Depp.
But former Israeli Chief of the General Staff and Defense Minister Moshe Dayan also appeared (see tweet above). His trademark was also an eye patch. He had lost his left eye during a World War II military operation in Lebanon.
