Ankle bracelet boom in Carinthia: 37 of the 200 prisoners are currently serving their sentences in electronically controlled house arrest. However, not everyone keeps up with the 24-hour surveillance.
There are currently 200 prisoners in Carinthia. 37 of them already wear electronic ankle bracelets. “That’s almost 20 percent,” said Harald Streicher, head of the penal system at Klagenfurt prison. “Meanwhile, the electronically controlled house arrest for the prison guards is already routine.” There are also conditions: addicts are regularly asked to take drug tests, alcoholics are checked daily with portable alcohol dispensers and a camera system.
Streicher: “In principle it works well. Only in one in 30 cases problems arise or the inmate gives the nerves himself and prefers to go to prison.” Because some prefer the cell to around the clock close to their partner and voluntarily give up the shackles and back early.
