Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had to involuntarily stay in India for an extra two days after the G20 summit in New Delhi. The reason was a technical defect in his aircraft. On Tuesday he was finally able to leave for home.
Indian cabinet member Rajeev Chandrasekhar wrote on Platform X (formerly Twitter) that he wished Trudeau and his delegation a safe journey home as they left the airport on Tuesday. The technical issues have now been resolved, Trudeau’s office said. But no details were given.
Strained relations between Canada and India
Before the plane broke down, Trudeau’s trip to India was already overshadowed by disagreements with the host. Relations between the two countries are considered tense. In a brief meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit, he highlighted “strong concerns about continued anti-India activities by extremist elements in Canada,” Modi’s office said.
Many Indians live in Canada. A particularly large number of them belong to the Sikh religious community. Modi’s concerns were interpreted as a possible reference to the Khalistan movement, which calls for a separate state for Sikhs in India. They promoted secession and incited violence against Indian diplomats, Modi said, according to his office.
Break in the German government
The German delegation recently had similar problems to the Canadian delegation. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had to cancel a planned trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji in August due to malfunctions on a Bundeswehr A340 aircraft.
