A mountain tour to the Goiserer Hütte ended with a helicopter rescue for a 65-year-old from Haid in Upper Austria. During the climb, the senior lost his strength and at 1,400 meters above sea level he developed breathing problems. He climbed to the top of the Niederer Kalmberg, where he also got cramps in his legs.
On Monday around 9:30 a.m., the 65-year-old from Haid and his 58-year-old companion from Leonding wanted to hike from the Ramsau district (Gosau) over the Tiefen Scharte to the two Kalmberg peaks. At 1,400 meters above sea level, the elderly man suddenly complained of breathing problems and weakness. Yet he was still able to climb to the top of the Niederer Kalmberg at 1,827 meters.
Emergency call made
The 65-year-old also developed cramps in his legs and was no longer able to descend independently. Therefore, his companion made an emergency call around 2:10 p.m., mountain rescuers from Bad Goisern and an Alpine police officer went to the hikers. After initial treatment, the elderly man was flown by emergency helicopter to the Salzkammergut clinic in Bad Ischl, where the 58-year-old was able to descend to the valley under his own power.
