The long-awaited meeting between Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is now in full swing. On Wednesday, the Russian leader received his North Korean counterpart at the new Vostochny cosmodrome in the Russian Far East.
“I’m glad to see you,” Putin said as he shook Kim’s hand for about 40 seconds. “This is our new cosmodrome.” Through an interpreter, Kim thanked Putin for the invitation and for the warm welcome. A little later, the two heads of state visited the launch pad of the cosmodrome and learned about the assembly of a launch vehicle of the “Angara” type. During this tour, Putin assured his guest of support in building satellites.
Kremlin: “Cooperation in sensitive areas”
Kim shows great interest in Russian missile technology, Putin told the journalists present. The talks are also likely to include military topics. “We will discuss all these issues,” the Kremlin chief replied to a question about military-technical cooperation between the two states. A central topic of the discussions is likely to be North Korea’s arms supply to Russia for the war in Ukraine. When asked, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov simply said: “Our countries are cooperating in sensitive areas that should not be made public.”
Military expert: North Korean ammunition wouldn’t change much
North Korea could supply Russia with artillery ammunition and anti-tank missiles for its war in Ukraine, but this is unlikely to decide the war. According to Western estimates, Russia fired between ten and eleven million bullets in Ukraine last year. Supplies from North Korea could help Russia replenish its dwindling ammunition supplies. “Access to these supplies is likely to prolong the conflict, but is unlikely to change the outcome,” said Joseph Dempsey, a defense researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
