The start of education in the western states has not gone as well as parents and students imagine. At primary school 44 in Linz-Pichling there is approximately one class without a permanent teacher. The responsible authorities apparently do not share the parents’ excitement.
The previous teacher of the third grade had already announced his departure from the school at the end of the last school year. Despite the position being advertised several times, no successor could be found in the summer. The director announced this in writing last Friday. A teacher is now taking over on an interim basis and will retire in a few weeks. Not the only problem that concerns many parents at this school.
There is currently no early care
Because early care was quickly phased out, which is a challenge for working parents. Apparently there is no one left to take care of the children before school starts. As if that weren’t enough, a fourth class will be without a teacher from the end of September. The successor has not yet been clarified; the position is currently being announced (as of September 14).
Department of Education refers to advertisement
The Ombudsman would have liked to discuss this with the Upper Austrian education director. Apparently they didn’t want to allow questions. A short response was sent by email. Currently, all classroom teacher vacancies have been filled. Due to changed staffing situations, new hours will be announced next Thursday. These types of routine advertisements are common in the school system due to constant staff turnover (especially at the beginning of school). Sounds weird.
What the State Board of Education office says about the problem
It is becoming a bit quieter at the office of State Education Council Christine Haberlander (ÖVP). The Upper Austrian Education Directorate is making “extreme efforts” to fill vacancies quickly, in consultation with local school management. In principle, all classroom teacher positions at VS 44 Linz-Pichling have been filled. Only recently did it become known that a teacher was retiring.
Yes, this applies to the teacher who intervened in an emergency. As mentioned, the original teacher announced his departure in June. Education policy in 2023!
