Wild chase – 300 hp drug boat races onto beach in Spain

Date:

A motorboat with a power of 300 hp landed at high speed on a beach in southern Spain on Monday afternoon. The scenes, strongly reminiscent of the television series “Miami Vice”, were captured on video by tourists – it was by no means an accident, but rather drug smugglers trying to escape the Spanish coast guard.

The extraordinary scenes took place on Monday on the beach of Los Enebrales in Punta Umbria in the southwestern Spanish province of Huelva, near the border with Portugal. The men were filmed driving at high speed towards the beach, narrowly missing the parasols that sunbathers had hurried away from as the smugglers ran into the dunes with the boat.

Men captured on shore
The men immediately jumped out of the boat – a so-called Narolancha, which is used to smuggle cannabis from Morocco to Spain – and tried to run away. However, the escape was not entirely successful: the emergency services contacted colleagues on land by radio, who were able to arrest two of the men.

The result: 18 months in prison and a fine of 120,000 euros – the boat was seized and is now destroyed together with the engines. The search is still underway for the other crew members.

According to local media reports, the stranded boat was empty. However, it is believed that the drug smugglers had been waiting for a call to pick up an illegal shipment of drugs from a larger ship further out to sea.

Not the first such incident
Similar incidents have occurred in the past on the beaches of the Costa del Sol, further east. In 2018, a beach in Manilva, near Estepona, was the scene of a chase between a police helicopter and a suspected drug smuggler. Some tourists were filmed running for their lives, fearing the high-speed boat would crash onto the beach and into the crowd.

In September 2019, holidaymakers watched in shock as a group of drug smugglers invaded another beach near the seaside resort of Estepona in broad daylight to transport cannabis resin from a speedboat to an SUV parked on the shore. The men, who threatened to kill witnesses if they alerted police, took less than three minutes to transport and escape.
