Of all European countries, emigrants from Germany still most often come to Switzerland. At the beginning of 2021, about 309,000 German citizens lived in the southern neighboring country, the German Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday. Austria follows in second place in the destinations for German emigrants.
In 2021, about 209,000 Germans lived in Austria. The increase was four percent, or about 8,700 people. The number of German emigrants has been increasing for years. Compared to 2020, the increase was around 2,100 people or 0.7 percent.
No language barrier
Both states have in common that the relocation is made easier for Germans by the physical proximity and the lack of a language barrier. Tax aspects may also play a role in Switzerland from time to time.
The third largest group of German citizens – about 140,000 people – lived in Spain. In France there are 83,000, in the Netherlands 81,000.
