In Egypt, a holidaymaker was attacked by a shark on the beach of a popular four-star hotel and seriously injured. Her left arm was torn off.
Egypt’s Environment Ministry confirmed on Facebook that a holidaymaker was seriously injured by a shark in the tourist hotspot Dahab in the south of the Sinai Peninsula. According to media reports, the woman was swimming in an area demarcated by buoys when the predatory fish caught her.
Confused with tuna
Her companion managed to escape and get to land and got off easily. However, the woman’s left arm was torn off. She was immediately taken to hospital; her life would not be in danger. According to Egyptian media reports, the man and woman assumed it was just a tuna until the fatal bite.
After the attack, an attempt was made to capture the tiger shark with a harpoon. However, this did not work and the animal managed to escape.
Three fatal shark attacks in two years
The Red Sea is a popular travel destination for divers, among others. There have been three fatal shark attacks in Egypt in the past two years. Last year, an Austrian woman died in Hurghada as a result of such an attack.
Litter attracts sharks
Authorities warn against dumping dead animals in the sea because this waste attracts sharks. However, livestock traders repeatedly resort to this practice. The predatory fish are said to eat carcasses, which often wash up on shore. Every now and then they mistake floating people for carcasses – with fatal consequences.
